The Power of Girlfriends

There’s something about that
magic number “40”. It could be part physiological and it could be part
biological. Or, it could simply be neurotic on our part. Whatever the
reason, the fact is it that most women approaching their 40s’ tend to
experience a variety of life crises.
It’s no coincidence that women initiate two-thirds of the divorces in
the U.S. in their forties. And it’s not by accident that most of us
change careers, develop new hobbies, and embrace new dreams and goals at
this point in our lives.
The question is why?
Is it because at this age we become more in tune with our inner selves?
Is it because -- often for the first time in our lives -- we know what
we want and go after it? Or is it because we finally understand that
loving ourselves doesn’t take away from being good moms, great wives,
and good children to our aging parents.
The answer to all of the above is yes! But it’s also
because we have the support, nourishment, and camaraderie from other
women who stand by us and watch us flourish.
The 40’s can be a treacherous time for women. If not careful, we can
completely lose ourselves in the demands of others -- romantic partners,
kids, aging parents, employers, etc. We need other women just like
ourselves to connect with, to explore, nourish, and re-charge our
psyche. We need other women to remind us that it’s okay to expect more
from ourselves. And, we need other women to laugh and cry with us as we
go through these radical changes in our relationships and in our lives.
In short, we need girlfriends!
At this age, there’s nothing more powerful than having a circle of
girlfriends saying, “I believe in you and I stand behind you. You can do
it!” And that’s how a new social networking website for women in their
