"Pocket Change"

I was watching PBS a few months ago and they had a show on with Suze Orman. Suze is a financial advisor and author of a number of best-selling books including, “The Nine Steps to Financial Freedom.” She was talking about how to create savings from unexpected places.

One idea she mentioned was to always make cash purchases using bills only. Save the change in your pocket and toss it in a jar when you get home. At the end of the month empty the jar and invest your savings.

I really liked the concept and with just a little twist I add a romantic flavor. I divide my change into two containers. The first is for pennies and nickels, which I'm saving and investing for our children's education.

The second contains the quarters and dimes. This is for MY investing. I invest in two areas. The first is for my long-term financial goals and the second, and most important, is for romance.

Each month I use some of the change I've saved to buy a gift for Joy. It can be;

flowers – store bought or florist delivered, both have a big impact,
candy – dark chocolate, especially Godiva or Scharffenberger, I try to make sure that Joy always has some for her private stash,
tickets - to a movie, play, or show, Joy told me that she fell in love with me the first time I took her to a ballet,
clothes – this way I choose the items I think she looks great in.

Sometimes I'll divide the money and buy two small gifts. I vary the day of the month just to keep Joy surprised. It's a great way to say “I Love You!”

Use your pocket change for savings. It’s an excellent way to find money to invest in life and in romance!
