Make Home Decorating a Totally
‘Multi Sensory’ Experience - Using Your
‘Physical’ and ‘Intuitive’ Senses
By Kathy Baker
Home Decorating is not only about designing and
arranging your home - it’s also about inspiring your mind, creativity
and 'physical' experience of your surroundings. And beyond that, it’s
also about nurturing your ‘inner’ self, your soul and involving your
‘intuitive’ capabilities.
Designing and decorating your Home can be a totally wonderful experience
using and stimulating your 5 ‘physical’ senses – the sense of sight
(pleasing to the eye), touch (tactile experience), sound
(to soothe and/or awaken your soul), scent (sets a mood and
recalls or creates great memories), and taste (to excite the
taste buds).
In addition, as our consciousness has shifted over recent years beyond
just our 5 physical senses to a ‘multi sensory’ approach
incorporating our ‘intuitive’ and spiritual sensitivities and
gifts, you can bring those into full play in your decorating.
Home Decorating is all about waking up, arousing and enlivening
your senses. It’s all about invigorating and liberating your
creativity, the expression of the essential you. The things that you
respond to ‘intuitively’ and resonate with from your special and
unique soul – your likes, preferences for color, texture, style, other
favorite things you gravitate towards, and even your quirks.
So, let’s take each of the 5 ‘physical’ senses in
turn, and integrate a liberal dose of the ‘intuitive’ senses also with
each -
Sight -
The sense of sight comes alive in the interiors of your Home - from
the visual experience that beckons as soon as you approach and open the
front door and walk inside. Your Home Decorating experience should
represent, celebrate and magnify your values and what is important to
you.
When people enter your Home they should get an
immediate sense of who you are and your personality by the sight, ‘feel’
and ambience of your home, or the particular room they’ve just entered.
So, display ‘you’ and the things you love liberally.

With our increased emphasis on seamless transitions
between indoor and outdoor areas, you can creatively bring the outside
in with your Home Decorating.
A dining room that overlooks a lovely lush garden or
outdoor room space can be painted in a vibrant teal green or pale apple
green to represent and accentuate the surrounding garden colors.

Pick an accent color from the garden that takes your
fancy or you’re intuitively drawn to - yellow, peach, pink, red,
crimson, blue, purple or lavender - and reflect that and carry it into
your accessories.

Add a large mirror on one wall to reflect the interior and exterior
surroundings, and magnify the abundance of a room dedicated to eating,
companionship and sharing.
A family room can be painted a barely pale touch of yellow through to a
brighter sunny yellow to represent and reflect the sunshine streaming
in, ensuring that it’s always a welcoming and happy room to which
everyone gravitates and loves spending time relaxing. Or take it up a
notch and try a warm butterscotch or apricot - superb!

Touch -
The softness and smoothness of silk cushions, contrasted with the
texture of robust weave cushions, or a woven throw rug with fringe on
your favorite velvety-soft sofa is a very pleasurable ‘tactile’
experience.

Sound -
The sound of your Home reflects it’s character and every day
familiarity and comfort, it’s own little micro world. The sounds of
regular visiting birds chirping, squawking, screeching, tumbling,
pecking into the soil and mulch for their tasty meal, dogs barking in
the distance, children playing, the occasional faint sound of a neighbor
or passerby. These are the sounds of your Home environment...
I love to listen to the mesmerizing, enchanting and soothing sound of
trickling water from the water fountain in my pond. And the sound of
wind chimes reflecting and working in concert with the prevailing breeze
or responding to wind changes as if to an orchestra conductor’s dramatic
crescendo...

Favorite music as a backdrop can either relax or
enliven, depending on your choice of style. Desiring to listen to music
can be the sign of an awakening soul.
Open up your window space and welcome the outside
surrounds into your home …
Scent -
The aroma in your home can really set the mood. Nothing is more
memorable than a favorite scent. Fresh flowers, scented candles,
burning essential oils are all very evocative and effective, and nothing
more enticing than the heavenly wafting aroma of freshly baking bread,
or vanilla or cinnamon flavored cake baking in the oven, or coffee
brewing.
A simple bowl of lemons, or oranges, with their
citrus-y scent is not only cleansing, but also a wonderful colorful and
natural centerpiece on the kitchen bench.

Taste -
The sense of taste is something you can incorporate into your
Home any time, whatever the occasion or season to create a welcoming and
comforting atmosphere.
Depending on the season, use local produce as visual attractors and
taste tempters - Display a bowl of apples, oranges, pears, lemons,
cherries, mandarins, cumquats, or tangerines nearby within easy reach,
or as a centerpiece on a kitchen bench. People who come to visit will
feel pleasurably, warmly and abundantly invited and welcomed into your
Home.
Sit down, talk, peel and segment an orange or mandarin, slice up an
apple or pear to share – it’s a feast for the taste senses.
A plate of crisp green apples just waiting to be
crunched or red juicy, flavorsome tomatoes ever ready to be freshly
sliced for quick and juicy devouring, or ripe strawberries, cherries or
grapes to enjoy.

As an appetizer for a lunch or a dinner, a specially positioned
simple bowl of plump juicy spicy olives stuffed with red peppers or
sun-dried tomatoes is great for picking at, and does magic for
stimulating and tempting the taste buds and culinary senses.
There’s nothing more nurturing than getting together
over food for great conversation, laughter, feeding and sharing with the
people you love. Hey, let’s Party!
Create a great ‘Atmosphere’ – Lighting is a fabulous mood
creator. Create a focus with a lamp in a corner, or particular spot for
accent. Light scented candles, light up your fireplace for an
incredible effect and surround your room with further candles. WOW, what
an atmosphere you'll create...

Listen to music you love, use soaps that are creamy, luxurious,
lathery and smell great.
Go for the ‘multi sensory’ approach and enjoy! It’s all about
creating great atmosphere and enjoying the marvelous abundance and joy
that life has to offer.
